Pink Cassia
Cassia javanica – Pink Cassia
Family – Fabaceae; Non-native Tree – medium-sized (20-25m), deciduous/semi-deciduous; Leaves – compound, paripinnate, alternate, stipulate; Flower – bisexual, pink, in panicles, during Apr-May; Fruit – pod
Just like the gold tree gets laden with brilliant yellow flowery chandeliers in April-May, its cousin the Pink Cassia gets endowed with pink blooms. The pink display lasts for several weeks. Also, despite the small to medium size of this tree, its crown of leaves is dense and shady. A native of Southeast Asia, it is absolutely no surprise that this Java island flowering tree has been adopted as an ornamental in many gardens and streetside plantations. An interesting research work has showed the isolation of antiviral chemicals from the Pink Shower fresh leaf extract*. Its timber is used for small furniture, while it is considered to bring good luck in Thailand society. It is the larval host plant for the Lemon and Mottled Emigrant butterflies. Several birds also visit the tree given its profuse pink petals.
